One of the key advantages of a collaborative robot (cobot) is its built-in intelligent force sensing, which allows it to safely work alongside humans. In collaborative mode, the cobot operates at a slower speed and will stop immediately if it detects any unexpected forces, resuming only after the safety is reset. When the safety measures are fully implemented and the work area is clear of people, the cobot can switch to industrial robot mode and operate at full speed.

The standard Granta cobot palletising system comes in three different versions:

  1. No Guarding, Light Curtains, or Safety Scanners: This version operates solely in collaborative mode at collaborative robot speeds due to the lack of additional safety features, preventing it from running in the faster industrial robot mode.

  2. Guarding Around the Cell with a Light Curtain for Entry: Normally, this version runs at full speed as an industrial robot. If the light curtain is breached, the cobot switches to collaborative mode and operates at reduced speeds. It will continue at these speeds until the operator resets the safety system, confirming the area is clear and safe.

  3. Safety Area Scanners Around the Cell: This version also runs at full speed in industrial robot mode under normal conditions. When the safety area scanners detect someone entering the safety zone, the cobot shifts to collaborative mode and operates at collaborative speeds. It remains at these speeds until the safety zone is reset by the operator, ensuring the area is clear and safe.

As a distributor, we have been consistently impressed with Yaskawa's collaborative robot (cobot) solution. We chose the Yaskawa cobot above others as it offers an impressive reach and robust build quality. The cobot is a quality, heavy weight, 140kg robot with a 30kg payload; making it versatile for a wide range of palletising applications as it can handle product with ease. Yaskawa’s technology also stands out compared to other collaborative robots on the market.
